Stridex Sensitive – a great cleanser during Covid-19

Stridex Sensitive Acne pads is a product which is used, as a cleanser, for the outbreak of spots and acne in teenagers. So for a large majority of the population, this product would appear to be irrelevant, not so?

Not any more.

The ongoing requirement in South Africa, of Covid-19, to wear masks has created a problem for a lot more of us. Beneath the covering of a mask, around the nose and mouth, there is now evidence of small spots, of acne-like attacks. This is often the result of make-up, sweat, lack of aeration of the skin and a build of dirt from everyday life. If you are in your twenties, thirties or anything older, the memories of a teenage break-out is an experience you don’t want to relive.

Introduce Stridex Sensitive Acne pads.

Stridex Sensitive Acne pads

A number of close friends and family, have grabbed a container of Stridex Sensitive Acne pads during the Covid-19 period. With the increased use of masks, there are more complaints about the skin condition around the mouth and nose.

Stridex Sensitive Acne pads are ideal for anybody – male and female – looking for a cleanser. What we have noticed is that it is a functional product, not cosmetic – so it is easily accessible to all people. It is also a pad, not a cream or a solution. It works on the surface of the skin. If you pick up a pad, you will instantly notice the moistness of the pads. This is largely due to the 0.5% Salicylic acid of the product.

The Salicylic acid is the key ingredient of the cleansing fluid on the pads. Its role is to break the bond of the dirt molecule with the skin, thus releasing the dirt from your face. At 0.5% it is a light cleanser, ideal for everyday use.

Why Stridex?

Amongst the people we know, we have conducted a survey of their experiences using Stridex Sensitive Acne pads. The reports are encouraging. The pads have delivered a cleansed skin.

Stridex Sensitive and Stridex Maximum are the two available variants of these acne pads. The concentration of the Salicylic Acid per w/w varies, between the two variants. The result is that Acne sufferers may choose from two products, with varying degrees of intensity.

Stridex Sensitive acne pads

The Stridex Sensitive range is a single-step acne control which has a gentle, soothing action on your skin. The acne cleanser controls the spots that develop on your skin, especially if it is a mild to medium breakout. In essence, Stridex Sensitive is a cleaning pad, with an active ingredient, which releases dirt and dissolves unwanted oils.

Stridex cleansing pads achieves it cleansing process through a mild keratolytic action. To explain, the keratolytic action removes the surface layers of your skin and unclogs pores which lie beneath. The aloe content of Stridex Sensitive contributes to the positive effect of the product. It has strong soothing properties which are great for the maintenance of the skin.

Stridex Maximum Acne pads

Stridex Maximum acne pads

On the journey to cleaner skin, Stridex Sensitive is a good place to start. However, Stridex Maximum provides a big punch to cleaning, treating and preventing acne. Stridex Maximum is an alcohol free, textured pad. It provides deep cleaning to your face. Due to the active ingredient, Stridex Maximum is a more persistent fighter of acne, than Stridex Sensitive.

Stridex Maximum acne pads contains 2% w/w of Salicylic acid. In other words, the acne pads contain the maximum level of Salicylic acid that an over-the-counter product may contain. The concentration intensity of Salicylic acid is significantly stronger than Stridex Sensitive. Therefore, it removes stubbon dirt from your skin, leaving it clean.

Considering the strength of Stridex Maximum, you are advised to to check whether this product is suitable for your skin. Consult your doctor, especially if you have have already received precribed medicine. Take care, too, you want to keep the moisture-filled pads away from your eyes and soft tissue areas. Lastly, once you have got into a routine of cleaning with Stridex Maximum, the sweet spot is when the product prevents pimple development.

The Stridex Maximum pads are available in a red box, and includes 55 soft touch pads container. Fortunately, it is not more expensive than Stridex Sensitive and is also available online at Blistex.

Teenage issues

The mornings are the worst. You wake up, and before you pull back the bedcovers to stand up, you can tell that something is attacking you. The source of the pain is located on the temple, forehead – centre, or in the crease alongside the nose. But worse, it is when the ache is on the chin. The discomfort highlights what you can expect when you first look at yourself in the mirror.

“I am sure that I dreamed of self-confidence” you think to yourself. “I am beautiful, attractive, good-looking. Today I can raise myself to a grand height, ready to put my best foot forward.”

Hardly.

The mirror reveals that the pain is a damn pimple. It has dashed your day. It is sore, and already you know that behind the pain of one identifiable spot, hides the rest of the spot-brigade. Lead, usually by one significant yellow-headed dancer, the troop of blackheads have danced their way across your face during those dark hours of sleep. You can feel the groan of disappointment rise up through your body. Here starts another day in teenage “paradise”.

The truth is many people struggle with mild to severe attacks of acne. Fortunate teens, have the means to invest in a face, by visiting a dermatologist and embarking on a course of treatment that can last anything from three to 18 months. The result is that one is almost guaranteed a face that is presentable to the vain world in which we live. Less fortunate teens, are those that agonize through teenage years in the hope that the break-through to maturity won’t damage their hopeful good-looks forever. Whichever you are, when faced with an acne break-out, you find yourself in front of the mirror, each morning, hoping that the dancers have moved to another club.

Stridex

Stridex is a skincare product-range which helps you remove the painful facial expression, which the mirror reflects each morning. Whatever remains of the facial dance-moves, you want to feel that you can be proactive about cleaning up the mess. It gives you some sense of power. It gives you a sense that there can be improvement. Stridex cleansing pads will help you do this.

Stridex is a range of soft-textured cleansing pads, made specifically for you – the acne sufferer. The soft, white pads feel cool and moist to the touch. They are light and thin and easy to run over the skin of your face. They are for everyday use.

Salicylic Acid

The function of Stridex cleansing pads is to remove dirt and oil from the skin-cells, and they have a keratolytic function. Keratolytic meaning: to remove the surface layers of the skin. When you are concerned about how many dancers are partying on your face each night, you really want something that will change their behaviour. Salicylic acid is a key ingredient of Stridex which changes the behaviour of red spots, black-heads and yellow pimples. The acid is an active ingredient, which breaks the bond between dirt and a skin-cell, and dissolves deep-down oil. It provides deep cleansing. The varying percentages of the active ingredient help you balance your acne-beating treatment. In South Africa, there are two variants of Stridex – Sensitive and Maximum.

Perhaps a little Stridex treatment will make a difference to the reflection in the mirror, maybe it will relax that frown. Maybe the dancers will move to another rave party, permanently. Try Stridex today!

Oxybenzone – the contradiction

Photo by Henriette Welz on Unsplash

What are you to think when you see the term: “Oxybenzone” or “Oxybenzone -3”? For many, it is just an ingredient which sounds complex, because of its description, and therefore damaging to people or nature. You won’t be completely wrong in your assumption. As lip-care experts, we want to ensure that Blistex products provide great quality and benefit to the user’s of our products. We conducted an investigation into this particular ingredient in order to you enlighten you.

Oxybenzone is also known as Oxybenzone-3 or Benzophenone-3. If you inspect the ingredients list of your favourite lip-balm, and discover an ingredient with a similar description but slightly different spelling to Oxybenzone, it will probably be a version of Oxybenzone. Also, in recent packaging updates Oxybenzone is being highlighted, independently, to alert the user to this ingredient.

Oxybenzone, generally, presents no issues for human beings. It is a naturally occurring chemical compound in various flowering plants. In modern times it has been used in hairsprays, make-up products and importantly, provides the sun protective ingredient in lip-balms. The Oxybenzone ingredient helps eliminate the negative affect of the sun’s UVA and UVB, on the human skin. In products which are used on the beach, in sports and day-to-day it is an effective protection ingredient.

But here lies the contradiction, while Oxybenzone is great for sun- protection in people, it has been identified as a destroyer of corals. Even a very small amount of Oxybenzone has a dramatically negative effect on the ability of the coral to defend itself. It is responsible for the phenomenon called Coral-bleaching, where corals lose their unique and rich colours. Oxybenzone causes the corals to become white and light in appearance. If a small amount of Oxybenzone impacts corals negatively, imagine the overall effect of up to 6000 tons of Oxybenzone that are off-loaded in the sea, in places like Hawaii, through tourist and holiday-maker swimming, surfing and vacation fun. It is quickly apparent that Oxybenzone will impact the ocean and corals within the ocean.

So when you next browse through the ingredients list of your favourite Blistex product, and you come across Oxybenzone, please know this ingredient is there to protect you. When you are heading into the sea, look out for one of our products which doesn’t contain Oxybenzone, and use that while swimming.

We will continue to produce Blistex products responsibly and revise ingredient lists to include only the best products for you and the environment. At the same time, use your discretion at different times, and apply the appropriate lip-balm in each situation.

Protect yourself from harmful UV rays with Blistex Ultra SPF 50+

“Blistex Ultra SPF 50+ offers advanced daily protection to defend lips from nature’s drying forces, in any season.” This is the opening statement which appears on the packaging of Blistex Ultra SPF50+ lip balm – the lip balm of choice for places with extreme weather conditions. We investigate the validity of this statement, by exploring the meaning and benefits of a strong SPF factor.

The Sun factor

There are three types of UV (Ultra-violet) rays in sunlight, which reach the earth. We are mainly concerned with two types: UV-A (Longer-wave rays) and UV-B (Short-wave rays). Both UV types are invisible to the naked eye.

UV-A and UV-B rays are responsible for skin ageing, eye damage and skin cancer. UV-B rays are generally associated with sunburn, while UV-A rays penetrate deeper into the skin affecting skin-cells below the outer-skin surface.

What we are continually try and do, is produce products that limit the damage of harmful UV rays, by producing products which contain SPF ingredients.

How does SPF help?

Skin Protection Factor or SPF is a measure of how well a skincare product protects the skin from the harsh UV-B rays. The Protection factor calculation is for the benefit of the user. A Skin Protection Factor is a calculation of how long the user can stay in the sun following the application of the skincare product. The calculation is quite simple. Assume that 1 SPF = 20 minutes of sunlight, then a product such as Blistex Ultra SPF 50+ means that the lip-care item will be effective for 20 minutes x 50 = 1000 minutes.

There are two notes to make with respect to SPF efficacy. There are potential factors e.g. water, or sweat, that may influence the duration of the effectiveness of the SPF. The second note, is that an a greater SPF e.g. SPF30, does not have double the effectiveness as an SPF15. In fact, an SPF15 filters out approximately 93 percent of all incoming UV-B rays. SPF30 keeps out 97 percent and SPF50 keeps out 98 percent. So don’t forget to keep applying sunscreen and lip-balm products.

Blistex Ultra SPF 50+

Ultra SPF 50+ is therefore a very effective lip-balm in areas where your lips are greatly exposed to harmful sun rays. While we normally consider this to be during the summer months, we cannot forget the effect of cold conditions.

Blistex Ultra SPF 50+ contains the protective ingredients for your lips. It is also infused with moisturizers and anti-oxidants which include Vitamin C and E as additional protection factors.

The combination of these ingredients helps ensure that lips are well protected from the harmful UV-B rays. When next in Dis-chem or Clicks, seek out the SPF50 shield and try this product. Or, simply purchase one here.
